Photography Along the Canal

  • Hudson Crossing Park County Rd. 42 Schuylerville, NY 12871 United States (map)

This beginner-friendly outdoor photography workshop focuses on the fundamentals of taking better outdoor photographs—composition, lighting, focus, perspective, and visual observation—using whatever camera participants already own, whether a smartphone, DSLR/mirrorless camera, or point-and-shoot. No prior photography experience is required.

Participants are encouraged to explore the interplay of water, light, and the distinctive architectural features of the canal system—locks, bridges, towpaths, and historic structures—that make canal landscapes particularly rich photographic subjects. Participants will receive an informational handout of tips from the session to continue experimenting afterward.

Led by Susan Meyer (SusanTaraMeyer.com)—experienced nature photography instructor, multiple award recipient in the annual Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor photo contest, and author of River Time: Mindful Reflections from the Upper Hudson (2025)—the program encourages creative engagement with the unique character of the canal landscape.

The session begins with an introduction to outdoor photography concepts that may include composition, lighting, perspective, focus, and visual observation. Participants then spend time independently exploring the surrounding area and photographing subjects that catch their attention at their own pace. The session concludes with informal small-group conversation, optional image sharing, and time for questions.

This event is part of the On the Canals program, brought to you free by the NYS Canal Corporation and the NY Power Authority. It is one of four photography programs offered at Hudson Crossing Park this season (July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 5, Oct. 17). Attend one session or come back for more. Each workshop is designed as a complete stand-alone experience—no prior attendance is required. While emphasis and photographic opportunities may vary from session to session, participants in every workshop will learn practical techniques to help strengthen their outdoor photography using any camera or smartphone.
